EG5 Bob Sinclar - Love Generation

YEAR: 2005
DIRECTOR:
GENRE: Dance-Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: M 15-24

Relationship between visuals and lyrics:

For the full music video it would be difficult to say that their was a direct relationship between the lyrics and the visuals throughout the music video. However, there a certain scenes which would show a relationship between the two.
This two shot of the boy and a maid would connote a friendship or relationship between the two characters. I would sway towards the friendship route as the maid gives the boy a glass of milk.

The use of a shot reverse shot between a close up of the boy and a mid shot the girl would signify love as the close up is used to show the boys emotion as the girl walks buy. This again is another aspect that shows a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics.

Genre Characteristics:

There are no specific genre characteristics in this music video. Although, there is a cameo appearance from Bob Sinclar which may have been used to signify the genre as he is relatively well known

Intertextuality:

In terms of intertextuality there are some aspects that bare in mind a wider audience.

This 2 shot long shot shows a farmer which may be referencing a wider culture across America.

Linear Narrative:

The narrative of this music video is very clear, as the boy chooses to travel across america instead of going to school. He encounters one slight problem but otherwise he has a very successful trip.

I would say that this follows Todorov's 5-part narrative formula. As their is one problem the boy encounters. This is shown on the right, a close up shows that the boy was able to fix his flat tire and return to his travels. A re-installment of the equilibrium.

Representations:

A main representation would be age, this being that what we assume to be the preferred reading of the director that the young boy is the main character. His representation is heavily signified by the fact that he was going to go to school this therefore, denotes his age range to the audience. In addition to this, the boy is also riding a bike which is stereotypical for a young boy. When looking at the age representation for the young girl, she is seen to be being guided across the road by her mother this also connotes her age.

No. of setups:

There are so many different setups in this music video as the boy takes a road trip.

San Francisco
Beach

The desert
Above are just a few screen shots of the numerous locations in this music video, as the setting is continuous because of the narrative the setting is constantly changing so the number of setups required would be a lot for a music video when comparing this to others.

Locations and Mise En Scene:

The locations as mentioned above are constantly changing because of the narrative of the music video. Therefore, the video isn't just shot in one place, there are a number of different locations used for this video which makes it much more effective rather than a single location.

This location would signify that the music video is set in America, because of the stereotypical fast food restaurants.

In terms of mise en scene, there are certain elements that connote certain things to the audience in this video although i don't think it was to heavily focused on because it didn't need to be as we follow the directors preferred reading easily as the video endures.

The children's backpacks would be a key piece of the mise en scene to signify that the children are at a school or either going to a school. A mid shot is used to show above the waist so that the back packs can be seen.
